VtES Storyline Event "Friday 13th"

Friday, 13th of February, 2004 A.D.
Outside Cordoba

The evening chill gave Claudio Severino a sensation he did not remember existed. It was all so strange to him. He did not know why he was not a vampire anymore. He did not know why he kept the use of magic. It all just happened in the last few days. From Vampire to Magus.
All he knew was that he was called to this point. He felt the earth beacon him. Calling him. He was sure of that.
He knew he had to destroy all of those who stood in his way. And now that he was here, as a mortal, he knew exactly what he had to do next. A creature moved closer, after sundown.
'Child of the Dragon, are you here to help me, or to hurt me?', Claudio asked.
'Frankly, I don't know', answered Lambach.
During the European Championship 2009 festivities in Palma de Mallorca on Friday, 13th of November the official storyline event "Friday 13th" will be held.

Six Direct Intervention Tenets

The guide is structured in five basic points about Direct Intervention (DI) (and consequently, any card that cancels other cards):
  1. DI cancels the card text, but the canceled card was still played.

  2. DI doesn't supersede/replace the basic rules of the game, such as the limitations on action modifiers/reactions played by the same vampire in the same action. It is important considering the first point, since the canceled card was still played.

  3. Actions canceled as played didn't even 'start' (or more technically, never reached resolution, as LSJ pointed out), so they don't trigger NRA-like clauses. This ties with the second point, since the rules about non-repeatable actions are in the rulebook now.

  4. Check out card-playing restrictions on each card canceled, especially for limitations like "only one [card X] can be played per [turn/round/combat/game]"; the text has been canceled, but a second copy still has the text and the first copy was still played.

  5. "As played" means "as played (from hand in the normal fashion)" save explicit text on the contrary, so you can't DI/cancel a card brought to play via other means (such as "Vast Wealth" or "Concealed/Disguised Weapon"). So, you can DI a "Concealed Weapon" card but not the weapon, it is about to bring to play.

  6. This holds for "Sudden Reversal" as well: Cards are not replaced in the "as played" window, but rather wait until after they are played. Other card-moving effects (like all other effects, by default) are also unable to sqeeze into the "as played" window. The "as played" window for card X thus restricts all players to the cards they have in hand at the time the card X is played. Specifically, you cannot tap "The Barrens" or "Erciyes Fragments" to go fishing for a DI or a "Sudden Reversal" in response to the play of card X (although you could use a DI that was already on your Fragment).
Once the player understand these six 'tenets', he'll be able to handle DI play smoothly no matter what card has been canceled with it. Of course, the text has examples on all points to illustrate them.

Take the Bleed Mate

This was originally a comment to one of the blog posts, and it was wasted as such:
This was mine (Matt Green, ed.) from the old UK newsgroup, now lost to russian hackers. Your post reminded me of it.

Take the Bleed Mate
-- with apologies to "The Streets"

In one single turn your whole game can turn 'round
Watchin’ incredulously as all your vampires go down
Lookin' to the right slightly, then lookin' to the crowd
Not crowin’ anymore- got a proper sorry frown
"Please let me show you what I can do next turn
I‘ve got good cards now, I can make his dudes burn
Seriously, if he blocks me, his 10cap’s goin’ home in an urn
I’ll even back-bleed your predator. 4 bleed. Certain."
I look at him, he stares almost straight back at me
But his eyes glaze over like he's lookin' to the left of me
He does nothing for what seems an eternity
Turns one guy sideways and I’m staring at defeat

Take the bleed mate
I know it's hard to take but his mind has been made up
Maybe you’ll get a pick-up game
Take the bleed mate
I know you don’t want him to see just how much your deck sucks
But you've got to pack away now
It's over

So then I move my hand up from down by my side
Try to bluff the deflect, but he can see it in my eyes
Tell him if he does that: his guys dies
Touch my biggest tapped dude and let out a sigh
Ask the table if anyone wants to Eagle’s Sight
"There's things I don’t want to be doin', you don’t wanna be takin’
Everyone’ll let you take that back, surely
Please, please, I’m beggin’ you, please".
He brings his hand up towards where his dude’s sidewards
Slaps down a bleed mod with skills I’m not blessed with
He peels a card off his deck, looks at me and then gestures
Asks if I’m blocking with anyone who’s not torpored

Take the bleed mate
I know it's hard to take but his mind has been made up
Maybe you’ll get a pick-up game
Take the bleed mate
I know you don’t want him to see how much your deck sucks
But you've got to pack away now
It's over

And I'm just sittin' there, I can't say a word
'Cause my hand's just wrong
I've got nothin'
Absolutely nothin'

Tryin' to block with Moncada out of bare desperation
Try to talk over him to change what he's sayin'
Shake my head with disgust to make his mind start changin’
Look into his eyes to make him listen again
"I'm not gonna fuckin', just fuckin' get bled out now.
'Cause you said two turns, no bleeding and that was your vow
And you're gonna just break your word, that’s pretty lowbrow.
You're well out of order now, this is well out of town."
He pulls away, my arms are flailing with rage
Gently tells me he’s sorry and looks at me straight
Says it was a good game and offers to shake
Then shrugs his shoulders, taps a guy, then bleeds my prey

Take the bleed mate
I know it's hard to take but his mind has been made up
Maybe you’ll get a pick-up game
Take the bleed mate
I know you don’t want him to see how much your deck sucks
But you've got to pack away now
It's over

I know in the past I've found it hard to say
Tellin' you things, but not tellin' straight
But the more I pulled on my hand and frowned
The more you beat me down

Take the bleed mate
I know it's hard to take but his mind has been made up
Maybe you’ll get a pick-up game
Take the bleed mate
I know you don’t want him to see how much your deck sucks
But you've got to pack away now
It's overa

Ebony Kingdom: Top Five Crypt & Library Cards

It's a little bit late for this article, but since "Heirs to the Blood" is nowhere to be seen (at least officially), what the heck here it is ... In reference to the "Legacies of Blood Top Ten" list made by Greg Williams in January 2006, I would like to show you a similar list, namely the top five of the "Ebony Kingdom" expansion, at least from my point of view:

Top Five Library Cards
  1. "Bamba" -- the long awaited card that let Laibon put progeny into play. In my opinion a well-balanced card when compared with the other progeny cards like "Embrace" or "Creation Rites". It has a resonable cost, and can be played more a lot of vampires (i.e. requires only Laibon, not Magaji), but on the other hand is restricted to vampires with capacity of 4 or more. Most interestingly other than other cards of this kind "Bamba" keeps the sect of the creating vampire, making "Bamba" an ideal candidate for an "Eldest are the Kholo" based on Laibon Ravnos.

  2. "My Kin Against the World" -- even outside theLaibon clan this card will get some playtime, especially since most of its effect can be used by non-Laibon clan. The card is especially good, if you have multiple minions which have at least two reasonable actions, e.g. Ventrue Lawfirm (Bleed/Vote) or most Rush decks (multi-rush actions). The only potential problem I see is probably, that this is one of the "win-more" cards.

  3. "Powerbase: Luanda" -- a very nice tool, that is perma-rush, forLaibon based rush or wall combat decks. As with other powerbases the location can be stolen, but this shouldn't be a big problem. When another player (tries to) get "Powerbase Luanda, you can either defend it (when playing a wall deck) or you can get it back, effectively having a rush action against that player.

  4. "Unholy Radiance" -- a very strong vote card, since it acts both as action modifier and reaction card, although it requires three Orun. This can be a good addition to decks like Weenie Laibon Vote (based on Kholo titles), if not for the clumsiness of getting the Orun cards in the first place (see below).

  5. "Exile" -- the superior version is sort of a "Banishment" variation, but instead of a successful vote it requires a number of "Orun" cards (and a successful action). The reason for choosing "Exile" over "Brutal Influence" is that "Exile's" inferior version is also good without playing Orun infact so good, that it will find its way into certain decks like "Tap and Bleed" decks, although it works only against younger vampires and allies and costs two blood.

Top Five Crypt Cards
  1. "Nana Buruku" -- even without a title her two specials -- +1 handsize and especially the two master phase actions -- make her smoking hot. For a reason she was one of the two main vampires in the NAC 2009 TWD deck.

  2. "Cesewayo (Adv)" -- the specials of both the normal and the advanced version point to superstar wall deck. Merged he's a monster with 4 votes and two great special abilities comparable to the Camarilla Justicars or even Inner Circle Members.

  3. "Umdava" -- a good addition to the dynamic duo of Akunanse magaji, "Uchenna" and "Nkule". With her superior Presence she might also fit into a Guruhi vote deck.

  4. "Arriette Sylla" -- Arriette is good news for the Weenie Potence decks, since she's the smallest vampire with superior Potence (besides "Tupdog").

  5. "Elizabeth Conde" -- together with "Sonja Blue" she's the smallest vampire with superior Celerity and Fortiude making her a very solid 5 capacity Ishtarri.

  • The advanced vampires (or at least 3 out 4) are somewhat underwhelming. Their special ability on the advanced version are not top tier quality, not to speak of the merged abilities (or lack of it) compared to the vampire's capacity.

  • Also the overall quality of the library cards is not satisfying and in fact I had a hard time determining even five top notch library and crypt cards for the "Ebony Kingdom" expansion. This maybe is an effect of the relatively low number of 40 new library and 20 new crypt cards, but looking at the "Twilight Rebellion" expansion with a silimar size I didn't have that problem.
The "Ebony Kingdom" expansion tries to boost the Orun/Aye mechanism heavily with 10 library cards mentioning Aye and 8 library cards Orun (out of 40 library cards total). As initially regarding the "Anarch" trait, the Aye/Orun mechanism has the problem that you have to put considerable effort into your deck putting the Aye/Orun cards into play. While "Static Virtue" and "Nkishi" are nice, what's missing are cards with effects similar to "Seattle Comitee" or "Twilight Camp" (for becoming an Anarch). Something like "Tap this card to put an Aye or Orun from your hand or library on a Laibon you control with no Aye or Orun".

And then the question always is: "Is the bonus provided by the Aye/Orun based cards worth the effort". This question remains to be answered ..

Seven Stages of VtES Grief

A little while ago XZealot asked in the VtES Usenet Newsgroup what are your reactions when you know you are going to be ousted? To this question (among others) Fred Scott answered like this:
Thinking about it, I usually go through 7 stages:
  1. Shock and Disbelief: I recount my pool over and over. I look at my cards in hand, counting them to see if I'm missing one .. the one that will save me.

  2. Denial: I say to myself, "(Joe, my predator, whoever) won't bleed me. He's got his predator to worry about and he's down to 18 pool for God's sake!"

  3. Bargaining: I then try to bargain feverishishly for more time by offering to be my predator's bitch for the rest of the game or to give him bennies in future games or just anything.

  4. Guilt: I kick myself over and over for influencing out that last minion. Or forgetting to bounce the bleed. Or being a generally bad deckbuilder. Or whatever. This usually overlaps bargaining.

  5. Anger: I lash out at my predator for being so obsessive about ousting me. Why does he need to oust me so soon?!? If he'd just wait a turn or two, he'd surely set himself up for the sweep! Sheeessssh!

  6. Depression: I suck!!! Gawd, I just suck!!! I suck so bad I can't suck for sucking so suckishly bad!!!

  7. Acceptance and Hope: Oh, well. Think I've got another deck in my box here somewhere. I'll do better next game.

Deck of the Month: September 2009: Mata Hari shifts you!

This month's deck is the tournament winning deck "Mata Hari shifts you!" played by Pauli Kiova during the Finnish ECQ 2009.

The deck is an interesting mixture of a vote deck based on Camarilla princes and Mata Hari's special ability to play any minion card requiring a clan and/or a sect. One of strength of the deck is diversity of the deck where the opposing players have a hard time guessing what's coming up next.
